What is the Sharing Ocean Data initiative?

Dive into
Ocean Data

Our oceans hold the key to a sustainable future.
Unleash the power of data to better understand and protect our oceans.

The Sharing Ocean Data initiative aims at leveraging the Offshore Industry’s unique access to the oceans to advance scientific research, deepen our understanding of marine ecosystems, and contribute to their protection. This initiative makes environmental data collected by offshore installations publicly available, fostering environmental conservation and supporting the global effort to preserve our oceans.

Launched by SBM Offshore in collaboration with Petrobras, the Sharing Ocean Data initiative aims at growing a solid data ecosystem by bringing onboard additional data donors and expanding the diversity of environmental data provided.

About the initiative

Our mission

At the heart of the Sharing Ocean Data Initiative stands the growing need to understand our oceans and marine ecosystems to effectively contribute to their protection. Our primary objective is, therefore, to enhance data accessibility for all stakeholders in both the public and private sectors by creating a centralized and free-access platform to share relevant environmental data that would support scientific research and academic studies.                                                                                                                                                                Together, we can drive meaningful change and support ocean conservation efforts.

Our vision

Imagine a future where reliable environmental data is shared seamlessly across industry and academia. Our vision is to build a robust data ecosystem that supports informed decision-making, improves forecasting methodologies, and promotes ocean conservation activities. Our flexible platform leverages a versatile cloud architecture, providing users with free access to an ever-growing pool of real data from offshore installations.

Objectives

  • Support ocean conservation: Facilitate ocean conservation activities by providing reliable data that helps in better understanding and protecting marine ecosystems.
  • Enhance data accessibility: Create a centralized and free-access platform for environmental data to support better decision-making and operational planning.
  • Promote collaboration: Foster industry-wide collaboration by encouraging stakeholders from academia and industry to engage and share data, driving innovation and progress.
  • Ensure data security and governance: Implement robust data governance policies and security measures to protect data quality, consistency, and integrity, ensuring data is secure and compliant with industry standards and regulations.

Future goals

The Sharing Ocean Data Initiative envisions a future where reliable environmental data is shared across multiple stakeholders from industry and academia. The long-term goal is to create a robust data ecosystem that supports decision-making, improves forecasting methodologies, and drives oceans conservation and environmental protection activities.

The initiative is structured to thrive on voluntary support from industry peers willing to contribute and is designed to scale through a flexible, versatile cloud architecture. As a result, users can benefit from free and continuously expanding pools of real data sourced from offshore installations.

Why protecting the oceans?

Oceans are key in our journey to a sustainable future, as they play a crucial role in maintaining Earth’s balance. They regulate the planet’s climate and act as a massive carbon sink, absorbing large amounts of CO2 and mitigating the effects of global warming. Billions of people worldwide depend on them for food, jobs, and economic stability. Oceans also harbour incredible biodiversity, housing countless species that contribute to the health of our ecosystems. Protecting them is not just about conservation; it’s about ensuring a sustainable future for humanity and the planet.

Why sharing the data?

The private sector, including offshore contractors within the energy and marine industry, has privileged access to remote ocean locations which are often rarely accessible by the scientific community. By sharing the data gathered as part of these activities, we can make a real difference in improving the understanding we have of our oceans and therefore actively participate in their preservation, thus contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals 13 (Climate Change) and 14 (Life Below Water). By sharing, we can make a difference and create a positive impact for a sustainable future.

Strategic partnership

SBM Offshore, Petrobras and Dadosfera have joined forces as strategic partners in the Sharing Ocean Data Initiative, leveraging their extensive experience and assets in the energy industry to drive this groundbreaking project forward. We are committed to enhancing data accessibility and fostering collaboration to support ocean conservation and environmental protection. By combining SBM Offshore’s expertise in floating production solutions with Petrobras’ vast knowledge and operations in offshore oil and gas, and Dadosfera’s data platform expertise, the partnership aims at creating a robust data ecosystem that benefits stakeholders across academia, industry, and the public sector.
